The Lotar is a four or five stringed lute with a rather fat round neck and a hollowed goat skinned covered body. There are two types of bodies used - the lotar used by the Rwais musicians of the Sous region (pictured) has a round body made of a tin soup bowl. The other lotar found further north uses a carved tear drop shaped piece of wood. Lotars have a stacatto banjo like tone that is often complimented by the more flowing sound of the violin like rebab.
