The ta'arija is a clay drum with a goat skin head. It is held in an upright palm and can produce several different tones depending on where the drum is hit- on the edge or in the middle. Ta'arija are often given as a gift to children to play during music festivals, ceremonies and other celebrations but must be considered, along with the bendir, to be the staple rhythmic instruments found in moroccan music.
